Singapore University of Technology and Design has unveiled a series of ambitious urban regeneration and infrastructure projects that demonstrate how design education addresses real-world challenges across Asia. The school's latest work includes a proposal to reimagine Tomonoura, a historic Japanese port town facing the pressures of rural decline and aging populations.
The Tomonoura project represents a growing trend among design schools to tackle heritage preservation alongside contemporary urban needs. Rather than treating the port town as merely a preservation case study, the proposal appears to integrate sustainable regeneration strategies that could attract new residents while honoring the site's maritime history.
Beyond Japan, the university's students tackled equally pressing problems. One project explores care infrastructure within Manila North Cemetery, a densely populated informal settlement in the Philippines where families live among graves due to extreme housing shortages.
